I thought I had a pretty good idea what a "honor killing" was before I read about this but I didn't realize that it really means that honor and pride went with the territory. Like, hey! Check this out! I busted a cap in someone's ass and did it right because they didn't do it the way we are supposed to in this family/religion /whatever. Luckily we don't do that in most of this country but I've seen it and man. That is something crazy. Like this story I'm going to talk about right now.
Quandeel Baloch,26, model and social media star was drugged and asphyxiated by her brother Muhammad Waseem in what is being called an "honor killing" in Pakistan this week. Dubbed by the media as Pakistan's "Kim Kardashian", her brother gave statements to the media and claimed pride in his work saying ,"I am not ashamed.We are Baloch and as Baloch we can not tolerate this."
Interestingly enough, Quandeel supported the family including the brother who allegedly murdered her. She had posted selfies including one with a Muslim cleric, Abdul Quavi, in which she sat on his lap and tried on his religious head wear. I can see how this would be a big problem for some people and the images have been removed from most sites that I could see, but they are probably out there if you want to look.
Although she posed as a model and scandalous for the climate of culture she lived in, she described herself as "a modern day feminist" and spoke about the hypocrisy in being held to a standard that women in the country were expected to be used only for being a wife and mother and not to leave the home, an idea and status she did not subscribe to and clearly would not be bullied into.
Rest in peace, young lady. Where you are there is no more shame for being who you truly are
Honor killing: the homicide of a member of a family by other family members due to the perpetrators belief that the victim has brought shame or dishonor upon the family or violated the principles of the a community or religion, usually for reasons such as refusal to enter into an arranged marriage, having sex outside same and behaving in ways that are deemed inappropriate.
CNN: The brother and cousin of social media star Quandeel Baloch are set to go on trial for her murder this week after an inditement was handed down.
I didn't know this but I guess under old law, the killer could be absolved and legally let off the hook if the family of the victim forgives them, but that's all been changed. It isn't like that anymore, it's a 25 year minimum for what we'd think of as first degree murder. Which is good, because the perp gets away with it if the family says, "You're forgiven?" It's all good? WTF?
