By now I'm sure most of us have all heard of the suicide of 14 year old Megan Meier. For those that haven't, I'll keep the history brief.Megan's parents allowed her to create an on-line profile on MySpace violating the age restriction that states users must be at least 14.Her mother monitored her use and let her add a boy named "Josh Evans" to her friend list. They chatted for a month until "Josh" turned on her and became ugly and abusive.Megan, inconsolable, wound up hanging herself. Later,it came to light that the profile was actually created by a former friend of Megan's mother, and an employee of hers, along with the daughter.
There will be no prosecution in this case. Here's where I'm conflicted. Someone should be held responsible. I hesitate to blame Megan's parents,Tina and Ron Meier, who are now seperated and divorcing. They allowed her to break the age restriction rule but other than that, they monitored her use of the computer and for the most part, behaved in a responsible manner.
MySpace had no way of knowing this would happen. They have some pretty paranoid ways of checking up on people [ just look at the fact that my profile has recently been ripped apart and I'm starting all over again] and not having all the facts before they cover their ass.I can't blame the site.Personal experiance proves the website can't be held responsible in this case.
I'm blaming the parents of the other daughter,Curt and Lori Drew.Lori admitted to the police she created the profile to gain Megan's trust and see what Megan's was saying about her daughter on line.WTF? This went way too far for that simple an explination. She went out of her way to manipulate this young girl and when she was ready, she systematically ripped into her.She knew what she was doing and I think there should be some kind of crime she should be charged with.
It's just a damn shame the legal system doesn't agree.
I'm with you on this one Anna, the woman who created "Josh" did so to deceive.....that alone tells me she was in the wrong. She wasn't a married woman creating a female to catch her hubby doing wrong, it was to deceive an innocent child.

The Meier parents have given an interview to The Today Show and it is being featured on the front page of msn.com.
This is sad, tragic, and it angers me deeply.I've seen the home address and phone numbers of the Drew parents splattered in vitrolic message boards everywhere.I'm just putting it out there now:don't post it here. Not because I am offering them sanctuary. They deserve none. But because I feel that is irresponsible and I'm not having that on my site.
Anything else is open territory.Knock yourselves out.
I've taken a little heat for this. Printing the names of the woman who created the profile has proven to be an unpopular decision.
I do not care.I feel that if the law doesn't care enough to charge these people with some sort of criminal negligance, the only recourse we have is to make them liable in the court of public opinion. To those of you who have emailed me,save your breath.I will not change my mind.Their names stay up. That's it.
Last night on Anderson Cooper [my hero!] he reported that Lori Drew was becoming angry with all the negative publicity and asked Tina Meier to "give it a rest".
WHAT? This just pisses me off more every day.
She's been listed on the website http://www.rotteneighbor.com Her business is suffering and her house has been vandalized more than once. I'm still not publishing her address and phone number but they are everywhere, including the website http://www.thesmokinggun.com
I don't know if this is true. I'm telling you guys this up front because I have no independant way of verification. This might be a hoax stirred up by internet trolls [God knows there are enough of them out there] But I'm posting this because it's news,I've gotten a lot of mail about this and I think so far,it hasn't crossed the line yet.
Plus you'll get to see a picture of the infamous Lori Drew.Make it into a screensaver and splatter fake tomatoes at it.
When I saw this news item,at first I thought,"Is this EVER going to go away?"
And then I realized,I don't WANT it to go away. This was a terrible thing that happened. Someone should be held accountable for it. The child's parent's knew she didn't meet the age requirement for the website but the let her make a profile anyway and monitored her use.Her name was Megan Meier and she committed suicide after being conned by the adult parent of her former friend and two other kids.
One of them has come forward and told her story, admitting her part in this disgusting mess. But she also has told legislators that Lori Drew, the mother of the former friend was pretty much blazing a path to harass Megan.Since Megan's death, this young woman says she has tried to kill herself as well. She says she hardly leaves the house. She has been given immunity in the event charges are filed in California,in federal court.
I hope something good comes from this. It makes the things we did as kids seem so miniscule it hardly bears repeating. And an ADULT harassing a child to death? For her there are no words.
FINALLY!!!!!!!!! The system has worked,a federal grand jury has indicted Lori Drew,a Missouri woman for one count of conspiricy and three counts of accessing protected computers with authorization to get information used to inflict emotional distress on Megan Meier, who killed herself over the acts of Lori Drew, her daughter, and Ashley Grills.
I have to say,I'm thrilled. There had to be a way to find accountability for this woman for Megan's death. It was a terrible, sad thing that I believed was a criminal act and thank God and the legal system she will be held in accountability for this.
I just saw the article and Anna, you are way ahead of me as usual. I hope this Bi*#h gets what is coming to her. This woman was way too cruel to this poor child. Now let's hope the jury gets it right the first time.

I'm still following this case. Jury selection starts November 18 according to the article from CNN.com
I want to feel better and I know I never will.Nothing will bring the dead back, and all cases are like that. But this is so pointless. There is no understanding it for me.
Lori Drew was convicted in 3 misdemeanor counts this week in a federal courthouse in the case of using federal computers for unauthorized access,in the case of Megan Meier who killed herself over a "boy" in a ficiticious MySpace account. This is the best article I've seen about the verdict,so do take the time to read it.
Also not only does it have a very clear photo of the hideous Lori Drew,it has a photo of her equally horrific daughter Sarah, who supposedly started it all.
That is such an 8th grade thing to do...she is a parent...she needs to grow up. Guess it's too late for that. Now I hope she gets what she deserves...at least something to punish her

Atta girl!! They did it! So why shouldnt they be known? I personally would like a few minutes alone with that lady and a baseball bat.
Honestly, the woman was an adult! And getting her young employee to help her to this was messed up as well,IMO. She has had a nervous breakdown and been hospitalized since this all happened. She wasn't in a position to really make a good decision. Like,"My boss is telling me to do this..." kind of thing.
We did stop doing this kind of nonsense in the 8th grade. I do know the Drew family has had to move because the town literally made them outcasts.
This is such bs. Some ignorant judge "tenatively" overturned Lori Drew's conviction instead of sentencing her, since she'd already been found guilty. Here's the link to the newsstory on CNN.
That makes me really angry. You know, they were just kids. Kids! Man when we were kids we were little jerks to each other occassionally but our parents never got involved!! And they sure didn't ask their employees to participate in it either.
I think pretty much everyone is enraged by the fact that she did something that resulted in a young girl's suicide, and not she may not be punished for it after it.
Sick, sad, pathetic Lori Drew. And I can't imagine what this has done to her daughter. I believe the husband has started divorce proceedings against her.
