Finally, after being shot down over Iraq 18 years ago, with no definitive evidence of his being alive or dead, a family has finally found their answers (at least some of them), and finally has some closure.
On the first night of the First Gulf War, Capt Scott Speicher's plane was shot down over Iraq (Jan 17th 1991.) For years, his disappearence has plagued the Navy and his family. There was evidence to indicate that he was alive and had been captured. There was also evidence to indicate he had died in the crash. Iraq refused to disclose what happened to him, and even sent back to the US a set of remains they claimed to be Speichers, which were later discovered to not in fact be Speichers. His remains were finally discovered in Iraq in July of this year, and extensive testing was done by our military and they were able to determine that the remains were in fact Capt Speichers. At the time of his disapperance, he was married to his college sweetheart, and they had two toddler age children. His children are now both in college themselves. That gives you an idea of how long they have all waited for answers. Finally, we can bring a husband, father, and hero home.
Thanks! This case has always had a special place in my heart. Being a Navywife myself, I can't even imagine what his widow had to go thru these last 18 years, wondering if her first husband was dead or alive. When at first it had been determined he had been killed in the crash, she eventually got on with her life, remarried (to one of her first husband's best friends), and had two more children. It wasn't until after all that that the Navy decided no he hadn't been killed that he was probably still alive and was a pow. I don't know if I could have dealt with all that. I've always felt so bad for what her and her two kids she had with Capt Speicher went thru, and then to think that he might possibly be alive in Iraq as a prisoner, everything he may or may not have gone thru.
And frankly, I'm not quite sure I believe this entire story. They claim that they found his remains at the crash site of his aircraft. But that site was searched many times before, and nothing was ever found before now. And the military hasn't released any info on how long they think he may have been dead. Honestly, I'm more inclined to believe he was held prisoner for a few yrs and his remains were hidden and just recently placed where they were found. I don't really believe he's been dead these last 18 yrs, but that's just me.
Here's an up to date news story on the case. While the family is greatful that his remains have FINALLY been found, neither they, nor their attorney are buying the story that he has been dead and buried in the desert all these years. I don't think we will ever know the real truth about what exactly happened to him. Because when that truth is known, it will come out, more than it has already, how our government basically left him there, for whatever reason. And our government is not about to admit to ever making a mistake. It's like I always say, I love my country, I love my troops, but my government can go F$CK itself!!
May his brave soul sleep in eternal peace. And my heartfelt thanks for his bravery in making my country safe. I will hold his family in my heart and prayers. RIP brave soldier.

I was watching Nancy Grace tonight because Nancy is on vacation [insert laughter] and at the end of the show they profile an American soldier who had lost his life in the service of the war.
Tonight I was pleased to see them honor Captain Scott Speicher. He had an illustrious career and died in the service of his country.
All our thoughts are with his widow Joanne, and his two children.
