Ft. Hood Massacre

So, I'm sure we've all heard by now about the murderous rampage that happened at Ft. Hood earlier this week.  At first, I thought it was another terrorist attack.  I was shocked, not to mention heartbroken that (allegedly), the attack was actually done by a soldier against his fellow soldiers.  Now I sit here and wonder how long it's going to be before another rampage like this occurs on another US Military base.

I am so fed up with these terrorists (and that's what that guy is, if he's capable of doing something this horrific) doing these horrible things all in the name of Islam, or Muslim.  I do not know much about the faith of Muslims.  But I know enough to know that THEY DO NOT preach extreme violence like this.

I also fear that this will set off backlash attacks against Muslims.  In the days and weeks after 9/11, the uneducated, redneck folks here in Tn (at least here in the city in which I live) basically started verbally and in some cases physically attacking anyone they suspected of being Muslim.  I was in a gas station one day, and some redneck dude rocking a huge beer gut with a great big wad of nasty dip in his mouth was yelling and screaming at someone.  The person he was yelling and screaming at "looked like they were Muslim," according to the moron.  I intervened and told the guy to back off.  He said lady, I'm just trying to protect people.  I said oh really, do you even know what this guy's religion is?  Or where he's from?  Do you know for certain he's going to tattack anyone? "No, but he looks like a Muslim, and they're all terrorists," is what the moron said. Turned out the guy who "looked like a Muslim" was actually in fact born and raised in Tn, and attended a Christian church.

Aside from this aspect of it, the Ft. Hood massacre also brings to light how incredibly broken our military currently is.  Our troops are exhausted, physically, and emotionally.  They need our support now more than ever before.  Because you have to wonder how many of them are now just as afraid of being attacked on their base as they are of being attacked on a deployment.  Our men and women in uniform need our help, and our goverments help, ASAP, or else another massacre like this will happen again, and again.  Because while Major Hasan hadn't deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq before, he had counseled hundreds of soldiers who had.  He knew what was waiting for him on a deployment, and what was waiting for him was pure hell.  It doesn't excuse his actions of course.  But it does indicate how horrible the situations in Iraq and Afghanistan have become if our troops are terrified to go over there, and even more terrified to go back.

I have to weigh in on this subject because it is becoming more and more apparent that our armed forces are having a hard time taking care of the soldiers coming home from deployment from Iraq [or Afganistan] with PTSD and social disorders making them virtually uncapable of doing someting as inane as going to Wal-Mart.

There is an EXCELLENT piece in this month"s Rolling Stone  [Shakera is on the cover,Issue 109,Nov. 12] titled,"The Fort Carson Murder Spree". Basically it is about three young men who were deployed to Iraq and rextended his term. The men came home to America and, according to the article, just killed for fun.
Fascinating piece and takes a stinging slap to the face of the government's shoddy handling of so many casuals of war coming  home.    evileye

CNN has posted a pretty good section about the Ft. Hood killings, and a profiler has  worked up an interesting profile of the shooter.

Very tragic, but worth reading.I honestly believe the more we educate ourselves, the further ahead we'll be in stopping these kinds of incidents.     evileye
