Last year for Christmas my daughter bought me a black and white pearl bracelet, lovely and a very thoughtful gift.
She said,"Look at the literature with it Mom,"And I did. The organization that sells the jewelry is called Nightlight Design and all proceeds go to helping women who are in prostitution and are trying to get out, sometimes at the cost of their lives.
Many are in other countries such as Bangkok, and Uzbekistan with branches in Atlanta and Los Angeles.Every piece of jewelry you buy provides direct support to women who have been exploited in the bars of Bangkok. You are helping to break the cycle of abuse by making a lasting difference in a woman's life where she may be needing that one bit of hope that can help her break free.

Thanks anna this is a topic close to my heart. I used to do outreach work for Sex Workers Outreach Project (SWOP). We visited workers in brothels and on the street, giving out free condoms, lube, legal advice, sexual health info and such. The workers were incredible women who made my job very enjoyable. I will suggest this site to my family....

Thanks Suz You are a breath of fresh air around these parts.
We so many times take for granted the ease and comfort of a home, health care, even an ice cold coke when we come home from shopping for groceries. These women deserve our support. Life is hard. Let's stand by our sisters and let them know they are not alone.
I think about how I got where I got and I thank God I didn't wind up in a situation where I was literally fighting for my meals on a daily basis, looking for a place to sleep or trying to pray that I would live through another day.
You know anna, some of these women fight so hard to get what we all just take for granted. When I was working with SWOP we were helping street workers. One of the women lived in a cardboard box with her teenage daughter. The locals got together and burned all of her belongings including her clothes, blankets and the box. They just happened to do this on a freezing cold winter night. I found her and her daughter sitting in a doorway wearing only their skimpy working clothes. She was schizophrenic, unmedicated and not trusting people, as you can imagine. I drove home, got my spare blankets and winter clothes and gave them to her. You know what pissed me off most about this.....It was some of her regular customers that participated in burning her belongings, all in the name of "cleaning up' the neighbourhood.
