A police officer falling in the line of duty is a normal, daily occurence in most major cities. Where I live, it's not a normal, daily occurence, and it shatters our community when it happens. And up until this past Saturday, Chattanooga, TN hasn't lost a police officer in the line of duty since 2002. That all changed on the morning of April 2nd. On April 2nd, 2011, Sgt. Tim Chapin, Commander of Delta Team, 26 year veteran of the force, husband, father, answered a robbery call, along with his partner. Jesse Matthews, a violent, hardened criminal from Colorado had just allegedly robbed a store. Sgt. Chapin and his partner responded to the robbery call. A shootout ensued, and Sgt. Chapin was shot in the head and killed. His partner was also shot and wounded, but has since been treated and released from the hospital. Jesse Matthews, the suspect and alleged gunman, was also shot and is in a medically enduced coma.
The question on every Chattanoogan's mind is what was Jesse Matthews doing in Chattanooga, Tn and how the hell did the state of Colorado lose track of such a violent criminal? Jesse has a long, lengthy criminal record. He was sentenced to 20 years for one of his crimes in Colorado, but was out on parole at the time of Sgt. Chapin's killing. His parole officer and the state of Colorado had lost track of him and were in the process of trying to find him. Well they found him, at the expense of a police officer's life . Please pray for the Chattanooga Police Dept, as well as Sgt. Chapin's Family. Our entire community is hurting over this sensless, and preventable killing.
