Columbine High School:Interviews with the parents, the student surviviors and those who lost their lives

Email....serious email!!

Dear Anna,

I know for a long time you've had a million questions about Columbine and your "alternative theory" that one killed the other and then killed himself has bothered me for quite some time. This piece was written by Susan Klebold, the mother of the second shooter,Dylan Klebold and published in Oprah Magazine.

I know you are no fan of Oprah [she's right up there with Nancy Grace in your book] so you might want to just read the piece. It is really good and might answer some of the things you are wondering. If I see anything else I will let you know. In the meantime, give this the once over and tell me what you think.

Anonymous

Okay,I get it. I'll leave you to your privacy for sending me this!! Wow. That is really something, and I thought I'd seen it all. I always wondered what the parents thought,I wanted to hear from them even thought they owed us some form of explination,as irrational as that sounds. I was mad as hell after reading the Dave Cullen book because as amazing as that book was,it didn't explain a thing that I wanted to have explained, and I honestly just wanted understanding. It wasn't until much later that I realized there isn't any way for me to get the kind of explination I want. You have to feel for the woman. I can't imagine living that out. What a total nightmare. As the reader says, give this article the once over and tell me what you think.  Poor woman.I'd like to hear from the Harris's so if anyone sees that,PLEASE!! Step up....

Email.....*sigh*

Dear Annarocket,

Nobody cares about Columbine anymore. Give it a rest.

Andrea,Myrtle Beach,SC

What the did you just say to me? How can you not care what happened? It was the blueprint for what is going down all over the world in the minds of depressed young people acting out.

For your reading pleasure:

In loving memory of Dylan, I support suicide research and encourage responsible prevention and awareness practices as well as support for survivors. I hope that someday everyone will recognize the warning signs of suicideincluding feelings of hopelessness, withdrawal, pessimism, and other signs of serious depressionas easily as we recognize the warning signs of cancer. I hope we will get over our fear of talking about suicide. I hope we will teach our children that most suicidal teens telegraph their intentions to their friends, whether through verbal statements, notes, or a preoccupation with death. I hope we come to understand the link between suicidal behavior and violent behavior, and realize that dealing with the former may help us prevent the latter. (According to the U.S. Secret Service Safe School Initiative, 78 percent of school attackers have a history of suicide attempts or suicidal thoughts.) But we must remember that warning signs may not always tell the story. No one saw that Dylan was depressed. He did not speak of death, give away possessions, or say that the world would be better off without him. And we should also remember that even if someone is exhibiting signs of suicide risk, it may not always be possible to prevent tragedy. Some who commit suicide or murder-suicide are like Eric Harris already receiving psychiatric care.

You want to look away and pretend this was no big deal and noone cares? Knock yourself out. But don't for one minute think nobody cares just because you aren't compassionate enough to be affected.

It's easy to say nobody cares about it. But really....what if your kid was MURDERED,yeah, murdered, and left dead on a sidewalk while helicopters broadcasted that image to TV and newspapers everywhere? How do you think that would make you feel? Would you ever get over it?

And don't tell me to give it a rest.

So,Columbine. I have thought about this probably more than most people due to the fact that I have an alternative theory. But we'll save that for later.

I'd like to share some thoughts from Dave Cullen's excellent book,"Columbine." In it,he posts some of journals of both Eric and Dylan, but the ones of Dylan are the really gut wrenching. That kid had more pain than any kid that age had a right to have.

Dylan:"I don't know what I do wrong with people. It's like they set out to hate and insult me.I never know what to say or do.A dark time, infinate sadness.I want to find love."

Eric:"I am GOD compared to some of these un-existible brainless zombies.I love natural selection.God,it's the best thing that ever happened to earth.Getting rid of all the stupid and weak organisms.I wish the government would just take warning labels off everything so all the dumbasses would either hurt themselves or DIE!!!"

*sigh*It makes me smile a little, here in my Black Sabbath shirt and cut offs, tattoos hanging out that I would be judged on sight as the "wrong kind". I would totally be put in the "wrong kind" catagory. But I feel for these two. They were severely mentally disturbed. And it keeps happeneing. Over and over.Don't believe me? Google,"school shooting" See what happens.

I was on You Tube watching a video about Columbine put together by Dave Cullen, and I left a comment for him, praising his book and asking him about my alternate theory.

I think [thought] that because of the way the bodies fell, the killers dominant hands, the bodies fallen positions that Eric killed Dylan and then killed himself. Dave answered me graciously, and told me that Kate battan from the ATF had gone over the trajectory and bullet casings, etc. and he felt they had killed themselves.

That's the end of my theory.  But it disturbs me that people should be so careless toward the families by saying things like, "Nobody cares. Give it a rest." It seems....hateful. Maybe you don't care and if you don't, why the are you reading a true crime blog? If you don't, peace out.

RE: Columbine High School:Interviews with the parents, the student surviviors and those who lost their lives

I have an observation about the Columbine killings that I am surprised I haven't heard others mention. First I want to say that I place all of the blame on Dylan and Kleebold and nobody else.

However I was seriously disappointed that the police did almost nothing to stop the massacre. If you read the timeline police began arriving almost immediately after the killing began but the very first officers to approach the 2 killers didn't do so until late in the afternoon.

Now I certainly wouldn't expect anybody to go into a school and engage a couple of kids with weapons and it is fine with me if nobody would be willing to do so as long as they did not become cops in the same town where my kids went to school. I do expect the local police in my town to engage the suspects if a similar situation happened here and I hope that they would. Trained police officers against un-trained high school teenagers does not sound like a situation beyond the capabilities of the police to me. I would like to believe that if children were being mowed down at least a couple of the local police would enter the building and engage them whether they had backup or not. The Columbine police said they had to clear the entire school for their safety and I don't doubt that is true but they surely knew exactly where the gunman were the entire time. All they had to do was follow the sounds of shooting and screaming children.

In all the video I saw police were escorting children who had already escaped to what they called safety but it seems to me like they were already safe when they were outside the school. I am sure there were dozens or maybe even hundreds of other people on the scene who could have and would have been happy to handle that important service. In my opinion what the police were needed for was going in and trying to save as many kids as they could by incapacitating the shooters as soon as possible. Not later on in the afternoon long after they had already committed suicide.

I know of instances where the police DID do exactly what I believe the Columbine police should have done.

Just my two cents.

I can't judge how a police officer does his or her job.... especially in in a situation like this, as I never have and hopefully, probably never will have to face this situation.

As a law enforcement official it would be standard procedure to call for back up and it's one hell of a big school.

The police didn't have all the knowledge that those in the bulding did.CNN was reporting misinfomation and making  a horrible situation worse. I suggest reading the Dave Cullen book,"Columbine" It has an excellent perspective and exmination into th disturbed minds of the killers   evileye

I love the name Peckerwood.

I thought about what you said a lot and you made some valid points. But there are a few things the cops didn't know......there were pockets of kids hiding in the gym,the classrooms, the halls and classes. It SO put them at a disadvantage that our tech society trained kids were using their cell phones to call the media from the scene of the incedent while it was occuring making it even more difficult to figure out just what in the HELL was going on in there! And then the media broadcasting that on live tv???

EPIC EPIC FAILURE.    disbelief

Diane Sawyer To Interview Mother Of Columbine Killer Dylan Klebold in Feb 2016

Diane Sawyer has announced she will interview for the first time the mother of Dylan Klebold, one of the two shooters responsible for the April 20,1999 school shooting in Littleton, Colorado in February 2016. The interview with Sue Klebold is timed with the release of her book, "A Mother's Reckoning: Living In The Aftermath Of Tragedy".

I remember that I had one thread about seeing an interview with her in Oprah's O Magazine, some lady emailed me and gave me grief about Columbine and told me I needed to give it a rest because nobody cared about it anymore and i blew a gasket. I'll see it I can find that thread and merge it. This just goes to show you: people DO still care about it. It was an absolutely horrible thing. I applaud Sue for her courage. I will read her book. Here's your link from The Hollywood Reporter.

Sue Klebold, mother of Dylan Klebold, who was one of the Columbine killers, has written a book that is now available for pre-order on Amazon.com. A Mother's Reckoning: Living In The Aftermath Of Tragedy can be ordered now and will ship on February 15,2016.

Since I haven't had a pre-release copy, I can't comment on what she thinks but I'm sure it has been hell for her and the rest of her family. I don't think I could come out with a book detailing such an unimaginable tragedy.

From Amazon.com: For the last sixteen years, Sue Klebold, Dylans mother, has lived with the indescribable grief and shame of that day. How could her child, the promising young man she had loved and raised, be responsible for such horror? And how, as his mother, had she not known something was wrong? Were there subtle signs she had missed? What, if anything, could she have done differently?

Here's your link with ordering info. We'll keep up on the release and interview that will follow. Best of luck to you Susan.

People are asking what happened to the girl who helped Dylan and Eric get the weapons they used in the shootings. Her name is Robyn Anderson and here is an update, or at least what I can find and it kind of feels....not good enough.

http://columbine.wikia.com/wiki/Robyn_Anderson

It is very hard to say what "would" have happened had they not had access to the firearms. It really does us no good to speculate now.

I got a little hung up on something so I didn't get to do much with the show but I did get to see it and it was tremendously sad. Susan Klebold, mother of Dylan, who died at Columbine High on April 20, 1999 after an attack at his school, was interviewed by Diane Sawyer who conducted her piece with quiet grace. Usually these kind of interviews are inflammatory and a little annoying, peppered with self centered morality tales we have heard one too many times.

The shooting seems to be one of the first of it's kind, in the way that it was reported by the media in real time as the events unfolded at the high school as they happened;kids were calling the news stations and their parents from the inside of the locked down high school. It was confusing as to whom was doing the shooting; Eric and Dylan were running through the school and using not just guns but pipe bombs and bombs made of propane tanks.

Columbine was a large school and that made it worse. When Sue Klebold heard her son was possibly a participant in the incident she raced the 26 miles from her job to her home to see if her two sons were in danger. Her son Dylan was nowhere to be found. Many of the people interviewed for this up to date review of the events of Columbine, were convinced that the media and the advertising of aggressive music and movies were a huge influence along with a degree of mental illness. The show, while it pointed out that Susan was not making a profit from the sales of the book and the proceeds are going to charities that benefit mental illness, people I saw who were live tweeting, myself included, thought that the show could have put a little more focus on that aspect.

In the end, there are no simple answers. Dylan was very troubled and Susan seems to blame herself, which is unfortunate. I believe I would as well. How could you not blame yourself for a tragedy of such magnitude that your child had been the engineer of? Ironically, she says Dylan was not the son she was worried about,  that she and her husband had an older son named Byron who was dabbling in drugs and she and her husband, who have since divorced with the stress over the Columbine murders in the forefront of their lives as well as being a survivor of breast cancer.

Godspeed,Susan. We can't understand your pain, never having felt such a thing ourselves but we can try to understand it and make a difference if we can and learn from your example.

Here's a link  that I watched on the Dr. Oz show, which was really good. He treated her with kindness but not overly sympathetic behavior. He asked her some hard questions. Have a look.

I finally found a copy of Sue Klebold's, "A Mother's Reckoning: Living In The Aftermath Of Tragedy" [ISBN: 978-10190275-2] at my favorite used bookstore  this week, a book I've been scoping out for a while for new insights into the April 20, 1999 school shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado

Sue and her husband Tom lived with their two sons, Byron and Dylan in a beautiful home that anyone would have assumed was the home of a family living a life of ease. [This book contains very few photos, I've seen them in other articles.] Tom and Sue were worried about Dylan's older brother at the time who they suspected might have a drug problem. But it was Dylan, who with his friend Eric Harris, that had the problems that led to the school shooting that has been profiled as a crime that changed the nation and sadly inspired a generation of disturbed teens to take revenge on their high school peers and were inspired by Timothy McVeigh and David Koresh and worshiped by Elliot Rodgers and Adam Lanza.

Sue Klebold goes through the journal of her son and learns how her son felt alienated and unloved. He wished for a girlfriend and more than anything, he wanted to be loved and accepted by his classmates and have a social life. When the young man his mother thought of as Dylan's best friend [not Eric Harris] got a girlfriend, Dylan's anger towards her became all consuming.Sadly, the love he searched for was beyond his grasp and in his own words,"...Just know I'm going to a better place. I didn't like life too much..."
