WICHITA, Kansas, Jul 14, 2006 -- A teen accused of killing a pregnant Wichita girl has pleaded guilty to the crime.
Everett Gentry, 17, pleaded guilty to capital murder Friday morning in the case involving Chelsea Brooks, the pregnant teen who was killed and dumped in Butler County. Because he is a juvenile, the maximum sentence he could receive is the Hard 40 or Hard 50 sentence, meaning he would not be eligible for parole for 40 or 50 years respectively.
Because of Gentry’s plea Friday, the state will recommend life in prison without the possibility of parole for 25 years, reducing the maximum from 40 or 50.
Gentry told the court that he talked to Elgin Robinson on the phone. Robinson is another defendant in the case. Gentry said Robinson told him he wanted to pick Chelsea up and have her killed because she was having Ray’s baby.
Robinson reportedly told Gentry he would pay him $500 to kill her. Gentry’s friend, Theodore Burnett said he would do it.
Gentry went on to testify that Robinson picked Chelsea up from the skating rink then Burnett got in the backseat behind her. Burnett then strangled Chelsea with a cord.
Gentry said he then helped dig the grave where they dumped her body in Butler County.
As part of the plea agreement, Gentry will have to testify at Robinson’s and Burnett’s trials. Last update: Jul 14, 2006, 1:14pm
This story absolutely makes me sick. I just can't get over the idea of these monsters doing this to this little girl. She was so beautiful and so smart. Someone should have toaked to her about birth control.
EXCERPTS FROM GENTRY'S TESTIMONY
On Friday, 17-year-old Everett Gentry described the June 9 kidnapping and murder of 14-year-old Chelsea Brooks to Sedgwick County District Judge Gregory Waller:
"I'm pleading guilty because I am guilty."
"We had a discussion over the phone that he (Elgin "Ray Ray" Robinson Jr.) wanted me to pick Chelsea up and to have her killed."
"While I was talking to him, I was over at Theodore Burnett's house and he said that he would do the job for $500. And with that, I believed that he was going to do it, and so I picked up Chelsea while he was in the car knowing it was going to happen."
"Mr. Burnett, he got into the back seat of my car and he asked me if I had like any shovels or supplies and I told him yes."
"I got the shovels for him and I put them in the trunk and he got into my back seat. Chelsea came out of the house and she got into the front seat of my car."
"Before we got to Andover Road, he (Burnett) placed a wire or like a cord around her neck and strangled her to death."
"Then I turned on Andover Road and went to a dirt road, I believe it was 60th Street and Andover, and so I went down the dirt road and it was another street, Mulberry Road, and I went on that road and my car got stuck in the mud."
"Then Mr. Burnett, he pulled Chelsea out of the car and took her behind some trees."
"And I was getting my car out of the mud and I used my shovel and then he told me to bring the shovel back behind the trees where he was, so I did, and he told me to start digging and I did that. Then after that, he took over the digging and he placed her body in the hole and then he covered her with dirt."
"Then, after my car was out of the mud, me and Mr. Burnett got back into my car and we left and went back to Wichita."
Really,this is just sick.Where were this girl's mother and father? And why wasn't she taught about contraptives if they knew she was sexually active?
I didn't follow up on this because I thought I'd just get way too angry but her parents really dropped the ball on this one. Maybe they didn't know or she had them fooled,but if she was pregnant then WTF?How could she hide THAT?
And now now she is gone and her poor innocent child as well. I swear,everytime I see stuff like this I just wounder if any kid nowadays has a clue just how much at risk they really are. God be with her and her son.
I've asked myself the same questions, Anna. The guy that got her pregnant is 20 years old, and Chelsea was 13 when she got pregnant. She was almost ready to have that baby, and she was at the skating rink. Then two guys pick her up and neither of them are the baby's daddy? I have to agree with you. Where the heck were her parents. They should have had that Ray-Ray monster arrested as soon as she turned up pregnant. This just makes my blood boil.
