NORTHVILLE TOWNSHIP, Mich. An autopsy was being conducted Friday morning on a beheaded, burned corpse found on a cul-de-sac about 20 miles northwest of Detroit and identified as a 26-year-old convicted sex offender.
Police are searching for a burgundy Chevy S-10 pickup truck belonging to the victim, Daniel Gene-Vincent Sorensen, 26, of River Rouge, Mich., after state police used fingerprints to identify the body.
"We believe it's an isolated incident," said Det. Lt. Michael Wildt of Northville Township Police. "We have to find out who did it, why and where did it happen. This is where we found the body, but we don't believe the person was murdered there."
Sorensen had been convicted of the criminal sexual abuse of a teen between the age of 13 and 17 in Tazewell County, Ill., according to that state's sex offender registry. But investigators weren't sure if that had anything to do with his brutal death.
"As of right now we don't have anything that says it is; we don't have anything that says it isn't," Wildt said. "We don't know."
The body was found Thursday morning by Northville Township public works employees along a road in Hidden Ridge, a subdivision under development. The body was set on fire Wednesday night between 7:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., police said.
"It burned for a long time," Wildt said.
Sorensen's head has not been found and a cause of death has not been released.
"Who would do something like this to my son?" his father, Jim Sorensen, told MyFOXDetroit.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said two teens accused in the "bone-chilling" killing and beheading of River Rouge resident Daniel Sorensen had carefully planned the attack for no other reason than the thrill of it.
Canton High School student Jean Pierre Orlewicz, 17, of Plymouth Township; and Alexander James Letkemann, 18, of Westland are being held without bond at the Wayne County Jail after being charged with two counts of murder and one count of mutilation of a corpse.
The two were arraigned Monday at the 34th District Court in Romulus and a "not guilty" plea has been entered on their behalf. A preliminary exam date of November 19 has been set.Worthy said in a news conference Monday that neither money nor drugs appeared to be the motive when Orlewicz allegedly lured Sorensen, 26, to Orlewicz's grandfather's home on November 7 "for the purpose of killing him."
Orlewicz then allegedly attacked Sorensen from behind, cutting his throat with a kitchen knife. Sorensen was killed by "multiple stab wounds to the back." Orlewicz then allegedly beheaded Sorensen's body with a hacksaw and burned the body with a blowtorch in an attempt to conceal his fingerprints.
The body was wrapped into a tarp that had been laid out in the garage ahead of time. Orlewicz then placed the head into a Rubbermaid container.
According to testimony at the arraignment, Orlewicz had trouble lifting the body into his pickup truck. So he asked Letkemann, a graduate of Livonia Public Schools, to come over and help him.
The body was then brought to Hidden Ridge Drive in Northville Township and his head dumped into the Rouge River near the Detroit/Dearborn border.
Canton police confirmed earlier reports that Sorensen was a registered sex offender, but police and Worthy emphasized that investigators have found no connection between the victim's sex offender status and his murder.
Worthy said her office is looking at other "persons of interest" in the case.
The suspects face charges of first degree homicide and felony murder, both of which carry life sentences; and mutilation of a body, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years.
Worthy praised law enforcement officials from scattered communities who pooled their resources to make the arrests in the case.
She expressed her shock at the nature of the crime.
"Even though we have seen it all, or think we've seen it all, still a crime like this surprises us all," Worthy said during the news conference Monday. "It makes us think and ask a lot of questions about our society."
This case has faded from the news a little but I did find a link with a lot of good info,I hope you find it informative. It at first seemed to be motivated by the fact that the victim was a sex offender, but evidence has proven it was more of a "thrill killing".
This is terribly sad. There are no "happy" crimes, but this one literally made me feel a sense of sorrow that I had to turn to my faith to resolve.I spoke to my 21 year old daughter on the phone tonight and hearing her lovely, vibrant voice made me weep with sorrow for the lost youth spreading this violent, evil crime.
The Associated Press has reported one of the so called "thrill kill" teens has turned states evidence on the other in exchange for not recieving the death sentance. First degree murder and felony murder charges were dropped and 18 year old Alexender Letkmann pled to the lesser count of second degree murder and dismemberment of a dead body.He is expected to testify against his friend as part of the agreement.
The verdict has come back for Jean Paul Orlewicz, and it is guilty of first degree murder, felony murder and mutilation.I don't know what everyone else thinks but I believe this was the right decision. There was no plot to extort money from the victim. The killer and his accomplice simply wanted to kill someone. They didn't know he was a registered sex offender, either. The link below has video from the courtroom, the verdict being read and assorted testimony from the trial.
