Why do innocent people confuss to crimes??

Honestly I have often wondered this myself,primarily after that whack-o John Mark Karr confessed to killing Jon Benet Ramsey.

They do it for the fame? They do it for the attention? Certainly they know they'll be caught?

They could do it for free health care, free room and board, free education, free EVERYTHING.

I have no factual knowledge however i'm guessing that it may be a way for people to become famous or important without the risk of prosecution for the crime. I have noticed that confessions are often made by people who have a strong alibi where the confession can be easily disproven. I do believe though that this must backfire sometimes.
