Kids Wandering Off

This might offend some people and if it does... oh well. The truth hurts sometimes, and I'm tired of seeing our kids pay for the mistakes of their parents.

We see it so many times on the news... stories of kids being found by passersby, who have wandered away from their homes.   It's happened again, and this time, with tragic results.

Little 3yr old Reena Williams like to wander off and explore with the family dog.  And despite her mother claiming in an interview that Reena "never wanders off or goes anywhere alone, she knows better", that's exactly what little Reena did on Sunday evening.  That time she got lucky, as neighbors spotted the child about a mile from her home, wandering around alone, and took her back home.  But that didn't stop a determined little Reena from wanting to explore, and so she wandered off again, on Tuesday night.  This time, she would not return home alive.

Her father last saw her around 6pm Tues evening playing with the family dog.  About an hour to an hour and a half later, she was reported missing.  Despite massive search efforts by family, friends, neighbors, and the police, they were unable to locate the little girl... until Wed evening.  At about 4:50pm on Wed evening, her body was found in a canal close to her home.  Police say the family is cooperating with police, and while the investigation is just beginning, right now anyway, there's no evidence that indicates any type of crime was commited... except that maybe no one was keeping a close enough eye on a little girl that was known for wandering off.

I can't understand how, especially in this day and age, people don't keep track of their kids.  It's not society's responsibility to raise, protect, and provide for children, it's the responsibility of their parents, or legal guardians.  And yet this happens over and over and over again.

As the investigation is still in the early stages, it is possible that an actual crime was commited.  But right now, this looks more like a case of parents who weren't paying enough attention to their kid.

If you aren't going to put the time and effort it takes into being a parent, then don't have kids!

Very sad. It was concluded that it was an accidental death and no crime was comitted, but if you don't watch your kid, something bad might happen.

Dear Annarocket,

What about the adage that it takes a village to raise a child?

Emerson Owens,London

Dude, come on...save the Hilary Rodham Clinton .Everyone is responsible for their own actions. You bring a kid into this world you better be prepared to take care of it.

Ummm... did dude miss the part that when the kid wandered off a few days before she died her neighbors were the ones that found her and took her back home? Seems the village was paying more attn to the child than her parents were.

Dear Admin,

Did that child [Reena] have an autopsy?

Beth Handless,Denver,CO

Yes,she did.She was determined to have drowned and no foul play was suspected. I took some heat from the collective for the Clinton bashing and asked to recind my comment. No. I never liked Hilary. On the other side,I remember there was a child my child grew up with that had a horrible home life and I had to watch her live in miserable conditions while we tried to help her any way we could. It turned into a neighborhood effort when the poor thing came to our door at 5 am for food in the dead of winter, and another time the mother trying to borrow money, obviously intoxicated out of her mind.

So while it is valid that in society, you have to make an effort if you see abuse and neglect,I'm not going to take on the planet's tired, poor and hungry, yearning to breathe free. Sometimes you just have to make the call about what may or may not be your personal responsibility.

Moving right along........
